The ideal candidate will lead, manage and formulate the plant’s efforts in areas related to health safety and the environment ensuring that the site is operating responsibly and in compliance with state and federal laws. The position is responsible for the development and administration of safety, industrial hygiene, health, and environmental procedures and programs. An important function of the role will be regularly communicating with members of the community and regulatory personnel. This role will require above average leadership ability and by auditing all systems and processes on site as they impact safety. Our Safety Specialist must have the ability to communicate clearly, both verbal and written; the ability to interpret regulations, legal documents and financial reports; the ability to function harmoniously with all employees and a general ability to deal with people, including outside agency personnel, the media and members of the community.
The successful candidate will be comfortable and calm making decisions in emergency and stressful situations as well as be able to interpret an extensive variety of technical information.
Relocation is required. The city is undisclosed but is in a scenic and desirable area in North-Central California.
Key aspects of Role:
Coordinate and direct safety efforts to ensure a safe facility in compliance with existing safety regulations and company policies, as well as providing a safe working environment for all employees.
Strong knowledge of and experience in the management of flammable chemicals and NFPA and CFPC standards.
Provide leadership and guidance in safety management systems and processes to create accountability for health and safety. Ensure emergency response, employee involvement, proper investigations, and appropriate permits.
Advise management on safety issues offering review and interpretation.
Coordinate and direct environmental efforts to ensure compliance
Maintain strong external network and state of art expertise in industry and field.
Perform special assignments such as interacting with community officials and media when an emergency situation has occurred that is of concern in the community; Engineering projects that require review and direction; Oversight on EPA/OSHA inspections.
Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and regulations
o Identify and communicate workplace hazards
o Correct or seek assistance in correcting unsafe actions or conditions in the workplace
Lead safety incident reviews to identify root cause and actions
Knowledgeable in PSM framework for managing process safety
5 plus years of relevant experience with a thorough knowledge of chemical plant operations as they
relate to safety. Some of this experience should be in direct safety leadership role.
Knowledge of federal and state regulations involving EH&S issues.
On call and able to respond to emergencies
