Lead Cannabis Geneticist / Extractionist / Biochemist

The Geneticist/Extractionist Technician manages and operates the extraction department as well as working with the cultivation department. This includes creating the necessary type products and fulfilling the necessary quality from batch to batch. We are looking for an experienced technician who can produce custom medicinal-grade cannabis extracts from leftover premium trim. The ideal candidate must have the knowledge and skills necessary to extract all of the components from the trim, identify the unnecessary components, and manipulate the cbd & thc levels as well as the amount of sativa, indica etc. of certain high-end strains. In addition to extracts, this position must have intimate knowledge of plant genetics and will work closely with the master grower to develop new strains to introduce to the market. It will be the responsibility of the Lead Geneticist to ensure equipment is maintained regularly and raw materials meet the necessary specifications.
The candidate will use a variety of different extraction techniques to optimize extraction of active components from plant tissue samples. Extraction techniques could include, but are not limited to, supercritical fluid extraction, steam distillation, traditional solvent-based extraction, and chromatography-based approaches. The candidate will then use various techniques to characterize and identify specific active components in the extracts generated by the optimized extraction procedures.
Responsibilities and Duties
” Operation and maintenance of solvent extraction equipment.
” Cleaning of equipment and laboratory facility.
” Maintaining strict inventory records of raw materials, chemicals, and equipment.
” Record keeping of all details pertinent to extraction processes.
” Washing and sterilization of laboratory glassware and equipment.
” Perform some administrative tasks, such as documenting all machine maintenance, making equipment/material orders, and improving or developing safety guidelines for equipment use.
” Must be knowledgeable of the operations and repair procedures of the equipment with which they work.
” Basic computer skills since process technicians are typically required to use programs such as Microsoft Word or Excel to document activities and use the internet to communicate with other staff.
” Must know how to read and use schematics relating to manufacturing equipment.
” Enforcing a culture of safety and attention to detail.
” Develop and maintain extraction/infusion operations by initiating, coordinating and enforcing operational policies and procedures.
” Oversee procurement of equipment for lab build out.
” Oversee and assist with the setup and production of the extraction lab.
” Perform sub/supercritical CO2 extraction, as well as butane and propane extraction as applicable.
” Train and assist team members to get equipment optimized for research and commercial production.
” Apply scientific techniques, procedures, or methodologies to complete tasks.
” Establish specialized research protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for extraction of active compounds from plant tissues, optimization of such procedures, and application of those procedures to extract large quantities plant tissues.
” Characterize and identify components within extracts from plant tissues.
” Develop and validate new analytical methods.
” Identify research areas that could lead to the development of new products.
” Maintain detailed and organized lab notebooks and research files.
” Write reports for internal and/or external publication.
” Effectively communicate results to both technical and non-technical personnel.
” Have a collaborative attitude and work closely with other scientists/ business team members to ensure that new technologies are developed in an efficient and timely fashion.
” Interact with business team members to address technical or regulatory questions and provide solutions to problems.
” Other duties as required.
Qualifications and Skills
” University degree in Engineering, Sciences or related fields.
” 3 years in a related role.
” Experience with various extraction techniques.
” Prior work experience in a laboratory setting or production environment would be desirable.
” Must be detail orientated with an eye on process improvement and optimization.
” Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi task, and to be flexible.
” Ability to push, pull, or lift heavy weights (50lbs or more); Sitting, squatting, standing, kneeling, bending, or walking through the workday.
” Must understand OSHA guidelines for workplace safety and hazardous chemicals.
” Compliance and understanding of cGMP guidelines.
” Strong leadership abilities.
” Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
” Prior work experience in a manufacturing setting is highly preferred;
” Strong organizational skills.
” Ability to work well under pressure.
” Must demonstrate strong team skills.
” Self-motivated and detail-oriented.
Job Type: Full-time (Salaried)
Salary: $80,000.00 to $90,000.00 /year including dental, vision.
